Apprenticeship and Regulated Occupations Project

Apprenticeship and regulated occupations play a vital role in the forest products sector. Thanks to these essential mechanisms, generations of workers have been able to acquire the skills needed to ensure Canada remains one of the principal forest products producing nations.

But the international market is presenting unforeseen challenges. Can apprenticeship and regulated occupations provide the sector with the innovation and transformation it needs in this uncertain climate? Can they adapt to ensure the industry’s future financial health and prosperity?

The current report responds to these questions, discussing both the actual status and the foreseeable future of apprenticeship and regulated occupations, and by describing some of the new approaches adopted to revitalize other sectors. Linking Innovation with Skill: Apprenticeship, regulated occupations and workforce development in Canada’s forest products sector provides important information to help marshal efforts aimed at reorganizing workforce development and bolstering forest products sector competitiveness.

The results of Forest Products Sector Council research will facilitate development of strategies targeting the improvement and growth of apprenticeship and regulated occupations while supporting the growth, transformation and viability of the sector.

The findings can aid in the mapping of strategies and programs for improving and increasing participation in workforce development initiatives. The study has concluded that the two training models have the flexibility necessary to adapt and supply the sector with the consistent workforce development required to effectively counter economic uncertainty.
